Dear fellow dog-walker,

Warning:  This post contains a photo that you might find disgusting.  You have been warned, so turn away now or skip this post.

It’s lovely up here in the headland isn’t it?  I love it here too.  I like how it can be wild and blustery and sometimes I imagine it is as wild as the moorland depicted in Wuthering Heights.  No I don’t pretend that I’m Catherine, looking for her Heathcliff, I already found him, thank you very much.

I also like how immense it is.  It’s big enough for the cows, for dogs and their owners to have a walk around without invading each others space.  But one thing that really irks me though is that some of you seem to forget a certain rule, no it’s actually a “law”, isn’t it?  You get fined, if you’re caught doing it.  It’s really easy you know.   But since you seem to have forgotten, let me remind you a few things you need to know/do before going out for a walk with your dog.

1.  Never go out without a poo bag.  You can forget the treats and the toys, they’ll forgive you.  Besides, you can always hand them a treat as soon as you get home.

2.  When the deed is done, don’t just walk away and pretend nothing happened.  Your dog didn’t do an imaginary poo.  There’s evidence and it’s really stinky.  Chances are, some poor dog-walker will tread over it.  It’s really easy, all you need to do is …

Unless of course, for some health reasons (arthritis?), you can’t really bend, or it hurts for you to bend – then perhaps, you shouldn’t even be walking your dog?  Surely there’s someone else who can do it?

3.  And lastly – yes I know how disgusting it is to be walking around with a poo bag in your hand.  But don’t despair, chances are there will always be a dog poo bin in your area.  If you’re from our neighbourhood, there is one, before the gate, near the football field.  It’s really difficult to miss, because it’s red and has a black cover.  Oh you mean, you are colour blind?  Surely you can read then?  Just dump it in there and we can all enjoy our walks with our dog without worrying about treading on your dog’s poo.

Sincerely yours,

Doc’s “Walker”

I don’t have a dog but get so fed up of treading in dog poo in towns and the stink of dog poo in the forests around where I live! Picking it up isn’t very common in France…to say the least!

    • Yes, it’s always awful isn’t it? Oh no, do hope the French learn pick up too 😉

I used to get so annoyed when people didn’t clear up their dog poo in London parks – especially as there were ‘dog poo bins’ everywhere! I actually also trained my dog to pee in the gutter so that she didn’t leave puddles on the pavement for kids to splash in!

    • Yes, I agree with you. Forgot to mention about the parks, especially since children play in the park, not to mention families have picnics there too. Ugh. Awful. That’s a great idea about training your dog not to pee on the pavement. Thankfully Doc likes to pee on the side of the pavement, especially if there are bushes or plants.

Thank you for the Public Service Announcement! It is a real problem here in the US, too. Frustrating!

It is such a problem round where I live. Some mornings you can smell all the poo from the morning walks! Our estate is interlinked by lots of paths and alleyways so I think people reckon that as people can’t see them it’s OK to leave the poo where it is. There is so much of it that if you walk along the path and look left and right all the sides of the path are covered in it! No wonder so many people drive their children to school each morning!

    • Oh dear, that sounds like a big problem indeed. Perhaps you or anyone else from your estate can get in touch with Council? Not really sure though what they can do … Put up more signs, or put dog bins nearby if there isn’t any yet?

  5. Kate @ Did That Just Happen?

It drives me nuts – I was out running and saw an owner bring her dog out of the house, walk across the street to the park just to let the dog do his business and then walk back! If I had been in shouting range I would have given her the business!! If she doesn’t want her own dog poop in her yard, what makes her think we want it in our park?!? Stuff like that drives me nuts!!

    • Same here! And it’s really annoying when it’s so obviously just left behind, like right in the middle of the path, as if to say I don’t really care if anyone steps on it.

  6. Ah, I wish people over here would have the decency to pick up their pet’s poop! But no. And with plenty of stray dogs…. 🙁

  7. Rosie @Eco-Gites of Lenault

Poop scooping is one of my least favourite jobs but if you own dogs then you need to take on all the responsibilities and that includes scooping the poop. Oh and don’t get me going on people who scoop and then fling the bag in the bushes … that is worse than not scooping at all 🙁

Many thanks for joining in with #AnimalTales with this excellent reminder tghat all we dog owners need to do our bit.

    • Oh lordy yes! We see those on the headland too, to think the dog poo bin isn’t that far from it at all. Sigh.

  8. Stella Lee @purfylle

Our council has kindly provided poop bags, but not poop bins. People seem to think it is better to scoop up the poop into the bag and then leave the bag behind so the poop can’t even biodegrade and the bags are left to pollute everything. Unbelievable really, I don’t understand the logic at all. Our dogs don’t like to poop on walks and prefer the back yard.

People that give the rest of us a bad name drive me mad! The lane by the fields where Stella and I walk has its own green poo bin, so I get so cross when I nearly step in a pile just feet away from it! Some of the bins even have free poo bags attached, isn’t technology amazing?! 😉

    • I know what you mean. I’ve seen poo too, just a few steps away from the poo bin. Amazing isn’t it? …. Oh and I’ve never seen poo bins with free poo bags yet!

Great post. I am so sick and tired of dog walkers who don’t pick up their dog’s poo-poo. My way of thinking is if you don’t want to pick it up, don’t have a dog!! #animaltales (obo kidGLloves)
