Mac Worries

I wish this was a post about the “Golden Archers” or “The Great Big T*ts of America” as me and my brother use to call it when we were teenagers, much to the horror of our parents.  Blame the book “The Talisman” by Stephen King and Peter Straub, we were obsessed about the book and used to quote from it, especially what Wolf or was it Jack (?) who instead of saying MacDonalds would  always call it “The Great”… yes, that one.  But no, I’m afraid I’m not going to write about food, or how fattening the food served there is.  I prefer the junk they sell in KFC.  Nope.  It’s about my four-year-old MacBook Pro and how it seems to be malfunctioning.

A week or so ago, the hard drive of my over-used MacBook made this whirring noise, as if it was working over-time.  I switched it off and then it seemed fine.

Then last Wednesday, it happened again.  This time the whirring sound was heard the whole day.  I’d switch it on and then it would be okay.  But after a while, the sound is back again.

What I have learned:  When in the brink of loosing your shit, do not google the problem, this will only make it worse.

Being the stubborn loony that I am, yes, of course, I googled and of course, what came up was that my trusty old(ish) Mac was in deep shit.  It’s going to crash.  Flipping dingdong bells!  To a blogger, that means death, or at least the equivalent of it.

After hyperventilating and being calmed down by the husband, I obediently switched my Mac off, but not before buying an external hard drive with a matching red case.  I may have lost my shit, but I can still have that cute case for my new hard drive right? 😉

The good news is, my Mac seems okay now.  No weird sounding noises, it seemed to have calmed down for now.  I’m hoping that it was somehow just a glitch.  Or maybe I just wanted to buy a shiny new external hard drive with a matching case?  I’m kidding okay.

For you Mac users out there.  Have you experienced this?  Any suggestions on what it could be?  And no, we don’t have an Apple centre in Cornwall, the nearest I think is Exeter.

My word of the week is: Panic

In other news, I’m sure all of you lovely folks in the UK will agree with me that this week has been absolutely glorious.  It almost feels like summer is here.  I’ve been out and about in my sandals nary a cardigan on.  One of the mums in the school gate told me that it was going to be hotter down here than in Ibiza over the weekend.  Let’s see if that happens.

This is certainly beach weather and time to put the barbecue on.  But in our experience, as soon as you take it out, it starts to rain.

Any plans for the weekend?

Do share.

I have just got my first MacBook and am hoping it lasts longer than four years!!! Glad it seems to be alright now, it might be worth ringing Apple though ?

    • Dean B

Will probably bring it to Exeter when we have the time 🙂 x

I would definitely panic if my MacBook threatened to go on me! Good call on the external hard drive…and the matching case X

  3. The Reading Residence

Oh no! My PC has started to do that whirring thing, too, which fills me with panic. What would we do?! I’m going with just ‘hoping’ it’ll be OK, too! Thanks for sharing with #WotW

I hope you’ve backed-up all your files? Hope nothing happens to yours too, especially with the revision and all that. My husband just bought himself a desk-top. So if (knocks on wood) my Mac decides to go crazy on me again, I guess I’ll have to use his old laptop. Not familiar with windows anymore I’m afraid 🙁 But here’s hoping ours will continue to plods on! 😉 x

I had a very near miss with my last computer and a lack of backup. I really recommend one of those cloud back up services that does it all seamlessly.

I do do a local back up whenever I take it out of the house, but it is so nice to know I am safe without thinking of it.

    Glad that all is OK.

I do use Icloud too apart from backing up with my external hard drive. Better be safe than sorry.

  5. Erica Price

Hope you manage to find a solution to it. Very worrying when something like that starts to go wrong.

I know. Can’t just leave it to luck, hence the backup But will do get it checked once we have the time to go to Ex.

I’ve never had a Macbook but I tend to get through a laptop a year. Not because I’m swank and upgrade them, but because you can be sure I’ll drop it, or spill something on it, or once even be sick over it! I hope yours fights on! x

Wow, a laptop a year? I’m actually really clumsy too. Thankfully I haven’t had any major spills near my Mac …yet.

Sometimes they make that noise when they’re a little too hot, it’s the cooling fan. I’ve had my MacBook Pro nearly 7 years now and it’s still going strong. Good call to get the external hard drive though.

    • Dean B

I know. My family have all been Macbook users and are astonished too that mine is already making noises considering theirs are older.

  8. I had a similar experience when I went to print off my assignment for university on Tuesday, the day it was due in, and my laptop wouldn’t switch on. I had to re-write a 3000 word short story from memory and a 1000 word reflective essay in 2.5 hrs so I could get it in on time. I am never using word again

Eek! I hope it was just a glitch….
Any sign of my laptop breaking and I come out in a cold sweat.
Have a great weekend hopefully with no Mac problems x

I hope so too… and yes, that’s exactly what I did too. x

  10. Thankfully my MBP has not done this. I would freak if it did. It would cost to damn much to fix. Apple are not cheap for anything.

    • Dean B

That’s exactly what’s worrying me right now though it seems to be really working fine as I type this right now. Fingers crossed.

  11. Joanna

My laptop breaking would be my absolute nightmare. I hope your issues are just a glitch.

    • Dean B

I hope so too, especially since repairs might be expensive!

  12. Elizabeth

It’s such an awful feeling when a laptop is about to die! I’ve had so many die on me that I save everything on an external hard drive now. Good luck!

I don’t have a MacBook, I actually use my other half’s laptop but it’s running so slow and like you did I panic that it’s going to not turn on one day and I’ll not be able to blog! The horror! 🙂

  15. Merlinda Little (Glimmer of Hope)

It my dream to buy haha. My son is saving for it and he has got about £5 pounds. 2k more to go!

I hope its not really going to go bonkers. It would make me cry for something so expensive to break!

Sorry I am not helping arent i?

I’ve not got a mac and any reference that pops up online referring to cookies just makes me want to eat some. However, I wonder if its a case of just defragging the machine. I’d consult a more technical person though and not consult google either. On searching my blood results on google it suggested I was heading for a coma! Good luck in sorting it out. #wotw

Ouch! Fingers’ crossed it doesn’t happen again – could it have possible over-heated?

Oh no that would have frightened me! So glad to hear it has been ok now and yes the weather has been so nice but sadly I have been working 🙁

I have no idea, I don’t have a MacBook. I do hope it’s just a glitch though. I’ve had a few laptops/computers die on me, so I can relate! It’s scary.
The external hard drive with matching case sounds fab!

  20. Emma T

It’s so scary when something like that happens. I had a problem with my old Dell laptop, so it had to go to someone to have everything retrieved off it that i’d not had chance to back up.
