Ironing: Is it an Obselete Chore?

When I was single and working, I think I only ironed when I needed to.  Not sure what I did with my sheets.  How odd, I can’t remember anymore.  Has it been that long ago?

But now that I’m married and have my own little family.  I like to iron all the beddings and linen and most of little T’s clothes.  I once mentioned on a past post that I iron our beddings and one of my blogger friends (you know who you are ;))  seemed surprised, or even shocked that I actually iron them.  I’m wondering am I the only one who does it now?

Is ironing becoming a thing of the past?  Is ironing considered retro?

You see, one of my small joys, is having clean, crisp and not a-single-crease-seen on our newly changed bedlinen not only on ours, but also on little T’s bed.  It gives me utmost pleasure and satisfaction that our beds are all looking perfect, at least my idea of perfect.  Oh dear, does that sound really sad?  To each their own I guess.  I like to focus on the little things that make me happy and newly ironed sheets happen to be one of them.

And I’m a bit embarrassed to admit, that I do like this chore.  I don’t find it tedious like some may do. It’s also best done while watching “Escape to the Country”, most times though I like to watch the news.  It’s the only time I can watch it without being interrupted by T.

What about you? Do you iron your sheets and clothes?

What is the chore you detest the most?

Or what are your small joys?

Do share.

I don’t iron anything….lol I don’t even own an iron. I do however own an ironing board. No idea why. hehehe

  2. Louise (Little Hearts, Big Love)

I don’t iron bedding – mostly because I don’t see the point when it gets creased as soon as you sleep in it but it’s something my mum does (and is quite obsesssive about!) so you are definitely not alone in this. Before I had Sophie, I did iron all of Jessica’s clothes but once Sophie arrived, I struggled to find the time to do it. I do still iron but only clothes that really need it (cotton dresses in the summer, cotton shirts etc.) Most clothes that come out of the tumble drier don’t need it to be honest and if I’m line-drying I smooth it all out anyway to minimise creases. I do quite like ironing when I do get around to doing it though – I just don’t have the time to iron everything like I used to (or rather there are other things that I’d rather spend time on instead!) It is nice to have properly ironed clothes though, I have to admit.

    • I’m beginning to wonder now if I’m as old as you’re mum? 😉 x Yes I do like properly ironed clothes though. We don’t have space for a tumble dryer, you see. But that will all change in the new house 🙂 x

  3. I used to iron everything but since I’ve had children the only thing I iron is my husbands work shirts. Would love to sleep in ironed sheets though, just need someone else to do it for me!

    • We’re the opposite. I only ironed when I needed it when I was single. But different now that I’m a mum 🙂 x

  4. I do like a the bedding to be ironed, just not quite enough to do it myself.

Janet bought the boys some non-iron school shirts a while ago. As appreciated as they were, it was also a little worrying that she’d obviously assumed I’d been ironing their uniforms up until then? I mean, isn’t that what school jumpers are for?

    • So true about the jumpers I bought my daughter non-iron pinafores but found them too crinkly after a wash, so I still ironed them. I know, there must be something wrong with me, I’m not exactly OCD.

I love ironed bedding, but I rarely do it – it’s such a faff! I don’t really iron much at all, as I hate it and just don’t see the point. My mum is horrified by me – she irons socks and tea-towels!?!?! I hate our iron, it was a super cheap one, and is really hard to use and not very effective, but I can’t really justify spending money on a new one seeing as I rarely use it! But then if I had a better one, maybe I’d iron more….

    • Oh my goodness, as much as I like to iron, I don’t do socks and tea-towels. However, bedding is a different matter 😉 I agree with you, don’t splurge on something you wouldn’t use. x

Like you I e gone through the stage of only ironing what I need. Now I’m married with a family I like to wait to iron when my daughter is in bed before I start; I’m too worried that she would want to play round the ironing board of I didn’t wait.
So I get to chill out and iron with a few glasses of wine and a film, it helps to get the job done quicker!

  7. (Mostly) Yummy Mummy

I’m with you on this one! I never understand how people get away with never ironing? Aren’t they a bit, well, crumpled? I can’t imagine washing and drying laundry then just putting it away all creased? It just doesn’t make sense and I don’t consider myself a neat freak by any means!

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one who irons then . Ironed sheets/bed linen is my thing. I just love them. And like you, I’m not a neat freak either.

  8. Ana De- Jesus

I don’t think it is strange plenty of men and women love to iron. I am not a fan myself but I do love the feel of newly ironed sheets!

  9. charlotte

I iron all of our clothes, but I only iron the guest linen not our own (we can deal with crinkly sheets! :p) – my nan used to even iron my gramps’ socks and pants!

    • Oh dear, pants and socks – not my thing. Bed linen and clothes, yes.

  10. As a teenager, I had a bad experience with an iron when I melted my school skirt. It put me off for years. I only then bought one about two years ago when I needed it for sewing projects. I do iron the odd piece of clothing if it’s necessary.

  11. Jed's mom

I iron almost every fabric in our house, sometimes even my hubby’s briefs. I don’t like folding crumpled clothes and sheets, to think that I have steam washer and dryer. I can’t see the dust mites but I like to think I’m punishing them for staying by ironing.

    • I definitely feel better now knowing I’m not the only one who irons 🙂 x

  12. I do iron and find it relaxing but ive cleverly learnt to use the tumble dryer so that things are crease free x

    • We don’t have space for a tumble dryer in our current house, hopefully in the new one 😉

  13. BloggerMummyLauren

I did try to iron things for a while, but I ended up with a huge pile waiting and just gave up in the end. I don’t remember my mam ever ironing much when I was younger to be honest, although my aunty ironed everything, socks/ underwear, the lot!

  14. Silly Mummy

I always ironed the absolute minimum I could get away with (so never bedding!) Now I iron absolutely nothing at all. It’s the one chore I don’t do obsessively! I have to admit that creasefree bedding does look nice. It just isn’t enough to motivate me to get out the iron!

  15. Elizabeth

I very rarely iron. Occasionally I’ll iron the creases out of a tea towel I’m using in a food photography shoot, but clothes? Nope.

    • The replies I’m getting here are so interesting. Although I must admit, there are really more people now who don’t bother to iron, than the ones who do like me 😉

  16. I iron Hubby’s uniform but that is about it unless we are going out and the kids clothes look crumpled

  17. Miranda (Anosa)

Oh wow, I can not remember the last time I ironed anything. I think it must be over 5 years ago now, I mean I attempted to get my jeans dry with an iron during my recent getaway to Brussels but no I never iron.

    • Oh dear, I remember doing that too as a student. But no haven’t ironed anything that way since then 😉

  18. Fi Ni Neachtain

I don’t iron any of my clothes, they come out fine from the tumble dryer or the line. My other half does the ironing though, I think he secretly loves it 🙂

  19. Erica Price

I can’t say I really enjoy it, but I certainly iron more than a lot of people. Hubby does his shirts and I do most of the rest. I’m with you on the bedlinen, but don’t do the sheets because they are fitted.

    • A lot of men actually do iron. I guess it’s also because they like their shirts

  20. Idaintyit

I’m sorry but did you just say you liked ironing?! I think you need to see a doctor like immediately haha I am terrible, I hardly ever iron unless it really needs it

    • We don’t have space for a tumble dryer. But we’re getting one in the new house.

  21. Zena's Suitcase

I haven’t ironed in years. I hate it and life is far to short to do things you hate. I do everything possible to avoid creases in my clothes and it seems to work 🙂

    • Yes, true. I do think that too sometimes, about life being too short, but really like it when things are ironed.

  22. Ive ironed sheets before..for the sole reason of making them warm (because they were so cold) before i enter the bed to sleep 🙂 🙂
